The German Interior Ministry is evaluating a plan to increase financial support for Syrian asylum seekers who voluntarily return to their home country to 8,000 euros. Current average payments for returning migrants stand at approximately 1,000 euros. Government officials suggest that higher initial grants could serve as a stronger incentive for repatriation. The Hessen State Interior Minister noted that such payments may be more cost-effective for the state than the long-term expenditure of social welfare benefits. Migration law experts argue that while increased financial incentives may encourage returns, monetary payments alone may not be sufficient to drive large-scale repatriation. There are currently more than 900,000 Syrians in Germany who do not hold German passports, with over 500,000 residing under temporary residency permits.
