Germany’s chemical industry, the nation’s third-largest industrial sector, recorded a 6% decline in production during the first quarter of the year. Sales figures also fell by 5.4% compared to the same period last year, while producer prices decreased by 1%. Rising energy costs have been identified as the primary driver behind the sector's negative performance. These financial pressures have hindered operational growth and overall output across the industry. European manufacturers experienced a short-term advantage as regional conflicts in the Middle East disrupted raw material supply chains. These logistical challenges in the Middle East temporarily shielded European producers from certain competitive pressures. The German Chemical Industry Association has declined to issue year-end forecasts, citing ongoing uncertainty stemming from geopolitical instability in the Middle East. The association further warned that any potential recovery within the sector remains fragile and difficult to sustain.
