A gastroenterologist has cautioned that intermittent fasting, which alternates periods of eating and fasting, is not a suitable dietary approach for everyone and may pose health risks in certain cases. Dr. Roşan İsayev said the method is not recommended for children, adolescents, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, as growing bodies require regular energy and nutrient intake. He noted that individuals with a history of eating disorders could see increased anxiety and unhealthy eating habits triggered by strict time restrictions. People with diabetes who use insulin or blood-sugar-lowering medication may face hypoglycemia risks during long fasting periods, and any dietary change should be made with a doctor's approval, İsayev said. He added that the approach should be avoided in cases of digestive system conditions presenting with stomach pain, burning or nausea, as well as in low-weight individuals, those with malnutrition and people with anemia. İsayev also warned that some medications must be taken with food or at specific times, meaning a chosen diet could conflict with a treatment plan. Even healthy individuals may experience fatigue, dizziness, irritability, headaches, difficulty concentrating and severe hunger, and the method should be discontinued if these symptoms persist.
