BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” A new fuel shortage in Baghdad and several other Iraqi cities has led to long lines at gasoline stations and higher transport fares, with some drivers turning to street sellers after waiting for hours only to find stations closed. Gasoline is being sold in the capital at prices several times higher than the official rate, according to the source text. Some residents said the fuel they bought appeared to be mixed with water or other substances, leaving their vehicles damaged. People who depend on daily car travel said the disruption has made it difficult to get to work. The source text also said the shortage may be linked to management and distribution procedures at oil facilities. A Petroleum Ministry spokesman said on Monday there was no crisis and blamed the congestion on the holiday period, hot weather and increased use of air conditioning in vehicles. The ministry removed the spokesman from his post on Wednesday.
