MOSUL, Iraq โ France recorded its highest nationwide average temperature on Monday since measurements began in 1947, according to the national meteorological agency Mรฉtรฉo-France. The agency reported a countrywide average of 29.8 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous records set in 2003 and 2019.
In the southwestern town of Bissoe, thermometers reached 44.3 degrees Celsius. Mรฉtรฉo-France warned that the current heatwave could exceed the historic temperatures recorded during the summer of 2003. High temperatures led to the early closure of the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum, shortened visiting hours at Mont Saint-Michel, and the temporary suspension of operations at a nuclear power plant. Authorities said dozens of people drowned while trying to cool off in water.
In Britain, the highest-level heat alert was issued for southern regions including London, with temperatures expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius this week and break the current June record of 35.6 degrees. Italy, Spain, Slovenia and Belgium have introduced emergency measures including shortened outdoor working hours, reduced train speeds and closures of schools and public facilities.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said the most vulnerable groups could face life-threatening risks without urgent protective action. United Nations Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres called for accelerating action against climate change, stating that dependence on fossil fuels was deepening both the climate and energy crises.
