Erbil traffic directorate sets new fees for vehicle window tinting

ERBIL, Iraq — The Erbil Traffic Directorate has announced new regulations for vehicle window tinting applications, including tiered annual fees that could reach 1 million Iraqi dinars for high-level tinting above 80 percent. Spokesperson Colonel Heymin Mohammed Amin said private, taxi and freight vehicles are all eligible to apply. Under the new rules, taxi and bus windows may be tinted up to 50 percent, while the rear windshield cannot be tinted under any circumstances. A higher-tier tinting option above 80 percent is also offered, with permits valid for one or two years. Fees are structured by tint level: tinting between 0 and 30 percent is free provided the glass is original; 30 to 50 percent costs 150,000 dinars annually; 50 to 80 percent costs 300,000 dinars; and 80 percent costs 500,000 dinars. The premium tier above 80 percent carries the 1 million dinar fee. Vehicles registered in other Iraqi provinces are also covered, provided they are owned by a Kurdistan Region resident. Foreign vehicles entering the region remain subject to existing rules. The directorate said the front windshield must remain 100 percent transparent, and drivers who apply tinting without authorization face fines and legal action. The new regulations replace all previous directives on window tinting.
