BAGHDAD, Iraq โ A former Iraqi parliamentarian said Sunday that recurring fuel shortages in several cities appear to stem partly from deliberate efforts to create internal unrest.
Arif al-Hamami, a former member of parliament, said the crisis has proven temporary and already begun easing in Baghdad and Basra. He recommended increasing domestic production capacity, operating refineries at full capacity and strengthening fuel imports to prevent future shortages.
Al-Hamami said the Oil Ministry must develop a clear strategy to address recurring supply issues. He also cited the departure of some companies and the halting of new production lines as possible contributing factors.
Despite recent refinery expansion projects and facility upgrades across Iraq, several cities continue to experience periodic shortages related to supply chains, transportation, storage and distribution.
