Flood death toll in Nepal rises to 1,273 as searches continue in Tibet

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Nepal's Disaster Management Authority said the death toll from severe flooding has climbed to at least 1,273, with 4,757 people still reported missing. In neighboring Tibet, Chinese state media reported 21 deaths and 541 people unaccounted for. Two government sources told Reuters that Nepal plans to reinstall part of a landslide early-warning system along its border with China, along with seismic sensors, cameras and satellite communications, in the Timuri border area where glacial melting unleashed torrents of mud, water and rock through mountain valleys. Equipment is being deployed to the affected zone. Of those missing in Nepal, 4,216 remain unaccounted for, including roughly 600 foreigners from more than 30 countries, the majority of them Indian nationals. The flooding has swept across wide mountain stretches, damaging roads, bridges and infrastructure and complicating relief operations, according to humanitarian groups coordinating helicopter, drone and porter access to the worst-hit areas. Nepal's army and rescue teams, joined by foreign specialists, continued search operations, focusing on hydroelectric tunnels where people may be trapped. No further details were immediately available.
