Cravings for sweets and chocolate that surface after dinner are not always tied to hunger, according to a report published by health site Verywell Health. The report says the urge reflects a mix of psychological, physiological and behavioral factors rather than a simple need for calories. Strict avoidance of sugar can trigger a reverse reaction in the brain that intensifies the pull toward "forbidden" foods, the report found. Food advertising and social media imagery also activate the brain's reward system, increasing saliva production and digestive activity even without physical hunger. The report lists the main drivers behind evening cravings as stimulation of the reward system, blood sugar fluctuations, a sensory-specific satiety effect that pushes the brain toward a different taste after a full meal, and a late-day rise in mental fatigue that fuels nighttime snacking. Adding fiber and protein to dinner meals can blunt the post-meal blood sugar drop that contributes to the urge, it adds. According to the report, moderate portions of sweets consumed at spaced intervals do not pose a problem, and fresh fruit is the healthiest way to satisfy the craving.
