ALGIERS, Algeria โ A fire broke out at an orphanage in the eastern suburb of Algiers, killing 11 people and injuring 19 others, Algerian state media reported. The blaze occurred at a facility belonging to the national Child Protection Authority.
Algeria's Civil Protection Directorate said 10 of those injured suffered burns of varying severity and that rescue teams evacuated five people with disabilities to a safe area. Firefighting efforts were continuing.
The identities and ages of the victims had not yet been determined, and the cause of the fire had not been disclosed. The state news agency reported that the Civil Protection Directorate has extinguished 913 fires across Algeria since July 8, as an extreme heat wave has driven an increase in blazes in forests and residential areas.
