BAGHDAD, Iraq — European stock markets closed mixed on Monday as tensions between the United States and Iran intensified and oil prices moved sharply. The Stoxx 600 index fell 0.6%, while shares in France and Germany also declined.
London’s market posted a modest gain, supported by mining stocks. Trading turned more cautious after U.S. strikes in southern Iran, which added to unease in financial markets.
Brent crude rose above $100 a barrel on supply concerns tied to the Strait of Hormuz. Investors are watching the route closely because of its role in global oil shipments.
