The Erbil Governorate has initiated early preventative measures to mitigate the risk of wildfires during the upcoming summer months. Governor Omed Hoshanav ordered the creation of firebreaks and the mobilization of civil defense teams to secure high-risk areas.
Hoshanav noted that heavy rainfall this year has led to an increase in grass and wild vegetation, which could fuel large-scale fires once the vegetation dries out. Consequently, authorities have been directed to clear brush around villages, agricultural lands, and roadsides.
Safety inspections will also be conducted at industrial zones, public markets, and large warehouses to audit electrical systems and fire-suppression equipment. These measures aim to prevent structural fires in high-density commercial and industrial hubs.
Local authorities are urging citizens, tourists, and motorists to ensure all campfires are fully extinguished in recreational areas and to avoid leaving waste that could ignite.
