LONDON โ€” A UK National Health Service specialist has warned that certain common medications, including some diabetes drugs and painkillers, should not be taken on an empty stomach. Dr. Kassem Ahmed, an internal medicine specialist, said nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin are best taken with food. These medications suppress prostaglandin production, which protects the stomach lining, increasing the risk of irritation when used without food. Ahmed said this can lead to gastritis, stomach ulcers and, in severe cases, stomach bleeding. Ahmed also cautioned about metformin, a widely prescribed diabetes medication, warning it can cause digestive side effects including nausea, diarrhea, bloating and vomiting. In contrast, the thyroid medication levothyroxine should be taken on an empty stomach, typically 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. Ahmed noted that medication timing depends on how a drug works and how the body absorbs it, advising patients to read patient information leaflets carefully. The NHS internal medicine specialist shared the guidance during a routine public health advisory.
