BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Engineering students at Diyala University held an exhibition of their graduation projects, covering a range of fields including heavy water purification, solar energy, medical applications and assistive technologies for people with disabilities.
Student Ahmed Khalid Mohammed presented a smart glove designed to allow paralyzed individuals to send three different audio alerts through finger movements and communicate with family members. The system can also place an automatic call for help via mobile phone if no response is received. Fellow student Taka Said displayed training laboratory equipment he developed by adapting commercially available solar energy components for use by faculty students, while student Mina Ali presented a project using a glass-ceramic coating to reduce the health impact of mercury ions released from amalgam fillings.
Other exhibits included projects on magnetic systems and absorbent materials for heavy water treatment, solar energy efficiency, drones, water harvesting and measures to reduce the effects of climate change, according to the university.
Diyala University President Taysir Hussein Mubarak said the displayed projects contained ideas with investment potential and that some would be implemented in university laboratories. A delegation from the National Security Advisory also attended the exhibition to review student projects for possible use in state institutions.
