Diyala Agriculture Directorate Budget Shortfall Disrupts Services Since October

DIYALA, Iraq — The Diyala Agriculture Directorate has been struggling with a severe funding shortfall since October 2024, severely limiting its ability to deliver services, according to a directorate official. The directorate employs approximately 1,700 people across 45 departments and has faced difficulties procuring fuel and basic operational materials. Maintenance of vehicles and equipment has been irregular, with some staff covering repair costs personally, the official said. Power outages and fuel shortages have disrupted administrative and technical operations. The directorate uses solar energy systems provided by an external organization in some departments. Officials said revenues are transferred to the Ministry of Finance, leaving the directorate unable to meet operating needs. Emergency funding is required to restore services.
