Dhi Qar reports 105 hemorrhagic fever cases, 8 deaths since start of 2026

DHIQAR, Iraq — Health sources in Iraq's southern Dhi Qar province said 105 confirmed hemorrhagic fever cases and eight deaths have been recorded since the beginning of 2026, with two new infections detected in the past 24 hours. The province has registered more cases than any other part of Iraq, according to the sources. Joint teams from the Dhi Qar Health Department and the local Veterinary Hospital are carrying out emergency measures to contain the spread of the disease. Those measures include disinfecting animal shelters, handling suspected cases directly and sending samples to specialized laboratories. Awareness campaigns on how the disease can be transmitted from infected animals to humans have also been intensified, the sources said. Health officials urged early reporting of suspected cases and cooperation with medical teams, saying both are important for prompt diagnosis and limiting transmission.
