Dhi Qar Provincial Council rejected the Electricity Ministry’s decision to merge the northern and Dhi Qar electricity units, saying the move is not fair and would weaken services in the province. The council held an emergency virtual session to vote on restoring the previous administrative structure.
Nafayat Commission chairman Abdulbaqi al-Umari said the province needs three electricity units rather than a reduction to two. He said the request to establish a third electricity unit in the Suq al-Shuyukh and Ahwar area should continue.
The council’s decision also included removing Northern Electricity Unit director Engineer Abdulmjeed Ala from his post and appointing Mohammed al-Sharifi in his place. Umari said the council may resort to the administrative court if the decision is not reversed.
