Death toll from migrant crossing into Spain's Ceuta rises to 61

CEUTA, Spain — The death toll from a mass movement of migrants from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has risen to 61, Spanish radio Cadena SER reported. Ceuta Mayor Juan Jesús Vivas said on Thursday that roughly 60,000 people had entered the enclave from Morocco over the previous 24 hours. Security forces continued to recover bodies along the Tarajal coastline near the border, suggesting the toll could rise further. Spain's Interior Ministry said more than 48,000 of those who crossed had already returned to Morocco, according to national broadcaster RTVE. Ceuta is a small Spanish autonomous city on the Mediterranean coast, separated from Morocco by a border that has long drawn migrant movements between North Africa and Europe.
