CANBERRA, Australia — Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers said growing support for the far right in the country is being driven by people’s legitimate concerns, following a weekend poll that put the One Nation party ahead of the governing Labor Party.
The poll, published by the Australian Financial Review, found One Nation on 31% in first-preference votes and Labor on 28%. It was conducted by Redbridge Group and Accent Research with 1,005 voters.
One Nation has long been viewed as a fringe movement under Pauline Hanson’s leadership. The survey was released as Labor brought forward a contentious tax reform aimed at lowering housing prices in Australia.
