Cardiologist Aurelio Rojas said only one type of chocolate can be considered heart-healthy: dark chocolate with a cocoa content between 70% and 85%. The cardiologist noted that the dark variety may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attack, while also supporting the regulation of blood pressure and cholesterol.
Rojas attributed the benefits to antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in dark chocolate, as well as its ability to boost nitric oxide production, which protects vascular health. He advised consumers to limit their intake to no more than 10 grams per day.
Nutritionist Roman Bristiansky said dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa is a rich source of flavonoids that help lower LDL cholesterol and support blood vessel function. Bristiansky added that its magnesium content supports the nervous system, aids muscle function and may improve sleep quality.
