Berlin attack suspect killed during arrest operation in Spandau

BERLIN — A suspect in a vehicle-ramming attack in central Berlin was killed by police on Friday evening during an arrest operation in the Spandau district, German broadcaster RBB reported. Authorities said a white minibus drove into a crowd during an event at the Tiergarten park, killing one person and injuring 29 others. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the incident is being treated as an " Islamist terrorist act." Berlin special police forces raided an apartment at plot 46 in Spandau as part of the investigation and exchanged fire with the suspect after he resisted arrest, according to RBB. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Abdullah al-Ballut, died at 18:34 local time. RBB reported that al-Ballut had previously attempted to join ISIS. No further details on the investigation were immediately available.
