Basra movement backs Medinah district head, warns provincial council over selection

BASRA, Iraq — A movement in Basra's Medinah district, north of the provincial capital, has declared support for Rafad Kadim Abdunnebi al-Shawi to remain in his post as district head, the group said in a written statement. The movement warned it would escalate protests if the Basra Provincial Council selects a different candidate for the position. The movement cited development work carried out under al-Shawi, including infrastructure, electricity, drinking water, health, education and park projects completed during a financial crisis. It said those gains should be preserved as part of the selection process, urging the council to avoid partisan favoritism in choosing local administrators. The statement also called on Basra Governor Asaad al-Idani and Sheikh Usama al-Saad to continue their support for the district. The movement separately warned that the oil fields could face popular action if the council is seen as manipulating the district head selection.
