US strikes site near Shalamcheh border crossing, official confirms

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A US official confirmed that the United States struck a location near the Shalamcheh border crossing, telling ABC News that the targeted structure was on the Iranian side, about eight meters from the Iraqi border. Iran's Mehr news agency reported earlier that a missile strike hit the area around Shalamcheh in the early hours of Thursday and said there were no casualties. Iran's Khuzestan province deputy governor gave a different account, saying US missiles targeted the passenger hall at the crossing and that two people were killed and 11 wounded. The Shalamcheh crossing, at the southern tip of Basra province, was also hit by a missile attack on March 24, which wounded Iraqi and Iranian nationals. Security measures along the border were tightened after that incident to contain the risk of regional escalation.
