Basra’s Civil Defense Directorate says the city has reduced recorded fire incidents by 85% compared with previous periods, citing field inspections and a rapid-response strategy as the main factors behind the decline. Director Mazen Muhammed said the aim is to further lower fire risks and make Basra one of Iraq’s provinces with the lowest fire rates. Muhammed said a comprehensive sweep of projects and facilities across the province identified 1,530 projects that did not meet safety requirements. He said all non-compliant projects were immediately shut down to prevent fires that could threaten lives and property. Specialist teams continue field and judicial procedures against parties that failed to comply with regulations, he added. The follow-up work, he said, is still under way as part of broader enforcement measures. Muhammed said the reduction reflects tighter on-the-ground monitoring and faster intervention by civil defense teams. He said authorities will keep up inspections and response efforts to sustain the decline in fire incidents.
