BAGHDAD, Iraq โ The Baghdad Provincial Council has denied reports that the brother of detained lawmaker Heyat al-Najaf was taken into custody. In a statement, the council said the claims circulating on social media and in some media outlets were unfounded and called on journalists and users to adhere to accuracy and responsibility when sharing information.
The council said such reports mislead the public and damage the reputation of individuals and institutions, adding that it reserves the right to take legal action. It also said only statements issued through its official communication channels should be considered verified information.
Heyat al-Najaf was detained on June 28 as part of government anti-corruption operations. The council's denial followed social media posts alleging that his brother, Sunus Najip Jasim, had also been arrested. No further details on the case were immediately available.
