BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Cooking gas shortages have resurfaced in Baghdad as the Islamic month of Muharram begins and Husseini convoys expand across the capital ahead of commemorations in Karbala. Convoy organizers in the Sadr, Shula and Kadhimiya districts said daily demand for gas cylinders used in meal preparation has outpaced available supply, forcing some to buy at inflated prices on the black market.
Oil Ministry spokesperson Salim al-Rikabi said the ministry has mobilized distribution companies to meet demand for gas cylinders, fuel, water and ice. The Oil Products Distribution Company announced it has temporarily suspended its official gas application platform to prioritize supplies to Husseini convoys during the Ashura and Arbaeen visitation periods.
Some convoy operators said the traditional use of charcoal has partially eased pressure on gas supplies, noting that pilgrims also prefer charcoal-cooked food. Prices for beef, chicken, rice and cooking oil have risen noticeably, with several convoys shifting to rations cards for rice, oil and lentils.
The Trade Ministry launched joint market inspections with the National Security Advisory and an organized crime unit to monitor pricing and supply. No further details on enforcement measures were immediately available.
