BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” Baghdad has been draped in black flags and banners marking the start of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar and the beginning of commemorations for the killing of Imam Hussein at Karbala in 680 AD. The annual practice of hanging the Husseini flag, selling black mourning clothing and setting up free-service tents has resumed across the capital, particularly in densely populated neighborhoods where black and red flags fly from homes and buildings. History researcher Mohammed Harib said the flags historically carried short symbolic phrases and were once used in battle. He noted that Imam Hussein's standard was carried by his brother Abbas, and that residents continued hanging such banners for months afterward in memory of the Karbala events. Harib added that the first official Husseini processions in Baghdad were ordered by Mu'izz al-Dawla of the Buyid dynasty in 353 AH, and that the traditions have endured through later periods of restriction. Markets have reported a rise in sales of black headscarves, trousers and headbands bearing Husseini inscriptions. Shopkeeper Murtaza Haffaj said demand typically peaks several days before Muharram begins. Across the city, Husseini mourning tents distribute free meals, water, tea and coffee to residents and visitors. Emad Hussein, who runs a tent in the Hurriyah area, said dinner is served from the first night of Ashura through the seventh day, with three meals a day offered from the seventh through the thirteenth day.
