Australian charged with foreign espionage over alleged intelligence transfer to Russia

Australian police have charged a person with foreign espionage after accusing them of gathering intelligence on the Ukrainian military and attempting to pass it to Russia. The suspect is alleged to have sought to relay information about the training and deployment of Australian military personnel serving in Ukraine to Russian officials. The investigation was led by the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Security Directorate. Detectives said the suspect made contact through online communications and encrypted messaging applications. Authorities described the probe as part of an operation aimed at preventing leaks linked to Australia's military assistance program for Ukraine. The Australian Director of Public Prosecutions said the defendant would be tried under Australia's foreign interference law, which carries a maximum penalty of at least two years in prison. A magistrate denied the suspect's request for bail and ordered that they remain in custody. The case has been opened as Australia continues to provide military training and weapons support to Ukraine. Officials said the investigation is being coordinated with allied intelligence services.
