Attack on Libyan substation triggers power outage near Zawiya refinery

Libya’s General Electricity Company said a 30/11 kV substation south of Zawiya was knocked out after an attack, causing widespread power cuts across the city. The company said recent security incidents have severely damaged grid facilities and components, undermining the stability of electricity supply. U.S. firm General Electric has halted all work at the Zawiya power station and pulled its technical teams from the site until security conditions are restored, the company added. It warned the move could further delay maintenance schedules and the return of damaged units to service. The attack occurred near the Zawiya oil facilities complex, which houses Libya’s largest operating refinery. The National Oil Corporation cautioned that a force majeure could be declared if drone strikes on energy facilities continue.
