Apple has issued a warning to iPhone users about a surge in fraud attempts conducted through FaceTime. The company said cybercriminals are using FaceTime video calls and invitation links to impersonate bank employees, technical support staff or public officials, and in some cases to pose as people claiming to have a personal relationship with the victim. Apple noted that FaceTime does not verify the caller's identity, allowing scammers to create a false sense of trust through voice and video. In one described scheme, fraudsters send a text message claiming unusual activity on the recipient's bank account and direct them to a FaceTime call for a fake "verification" process. During the call, scammers request screen sharing, one-time security codes or money transfers. Apple said that once obtained, that information can be used to access the victim's accounts. The company stated that its authorized staff members do not initiate unsolicited FaceTime calls asking for passwords or verification codes, and urged users to end and report such calls immediately.
