The American Diabetes Association says fruit should not be excluded entirely from the diets of people with diabetes because of its sugar content, noting that fresh or unsweetened frozen fruits are among the most suitable options. The group advises against choosing foods based solely on glycemic index, recommending that portion size, total carbohydrate content and fruit ripeness also be considered. Strawberries, oranges and grapefruit are listed as rich sources of vitamin C and fiber, with a caution that grapefruit can interact with certain cholesterol and blood pressure medications and that patients should consult their doctor. Peaches, pears and cherries are described as fruits that can be added to the diet with portion control, with dried or syrup-packed canned varieties to be avoided. Avocado is distinguished from other fruits by its low sugar and high unsaturated fat content, though its higher calorie content means portions should be limited. Pomegranate, papaya and pineapple can also be included in a diabetic patient's meal plan when consumed in moderation and with carbohydrates counted. A small slice of fresh fruit or half a cup of frozen or canned fruit contains roughly 15 grams of carbohydrates, while portions of dried fruit and fruit juice are considerably smaller, the guidance states. The association recommends that the eating plan be tailored to the individual by a doctor or dietitian, taking into account the patient's medications and personal glucose response.
