AC Milan said on Tuesday that Franco Baresi, one of the defining figures in the club's history, has died at the age of 66. In a statement, the Italian club said Baresi's character and presence would remain part of its identity, and that his famous number 6 shirt would forever be associated with the name of Milan. The club extended its condolences to his family and said supporters felt the loss personally. A defender, Baresi spent his entire professional career with Milan, playing from 1977 to 1997 and captaining the side for 15 seasons. He also captained Italy, lifting the 1982 World Cup in Spain and finishing third on home soil in 1990 before losing the 1994 final in the United States. He remains the only player to have finished first, second and third at a World Cup. Milan retired the number 6 shirt after Baresi's farewell match in 1997, the first time the club had taken such a step in its history.
