Zinedine Zidane headbutted Italy defender Marco Materazzi during extra time of the 2006 FIFA World Cup final, one of the most talked-about moments in the tournament's history. The incident came in the French captain's final professional match, with Zidane responding to a verbal exchange by striking Materazzi in the chest. Referee Horacio Elizondo showed Zidane a straight red card, forcing him off the pitch before the trophy was lifted.
France went on to lose the final 5-3 on penalties to Italy, with Zidane departing the field without getting his hands on the World Cup trophy. The headbutt also ended his playing career on the spot.
FIFA announced after the match that Zidane had been handed a three-match ban and a 7,500 Swiss franc fine. Materazzi received a two-match ban and a 5,000 Swiss franc fine for verbal provocation, according to the governing body.
