YouTube announced that it will change how it counts video views beginning September 24, 2026. Under the new system, a video's view counter will increment the moment a user starts playback, with the amount of time the viewer spends watching no longer factored into the count.
The company said it is extending the view-counting method it introduced for Shorts last year to all other video formats, aiming to create a single standard across the platform. YouTube stated that creators had asked for a clearer measure of reach. Under the new rules, any playback from the first frame of a video will be recorded as a view and reflected in the overall count.
Because the counter will rise even if a viewer closes the video after a few seconds, published videos are expected to see their view totals climb more quickly. YouTube will continue using a separate metric called "Engaged Views" for revenue and engagement calculations. The company said this distinction is intended to give advertisers more transparent reach data during negotiations.
YouTube said the new view-counting system will take effect globally on September 24, 2026.
