BAGHDAD, Iraq — US strikes on Iran have effectively severed the port city of Bandar Abbas from the rest of the country, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported, with bridges and transport infrastructure damaged, cutting road and rail links to the city.
Bandar Abbas, one of Iran's most important ports, also hosts a naval base overlooking the Strait of Hormuz. The Telegraph said disruption to the port and surrounding trade routes threatens roughly half of Iran's foreign commerce, citing the strategic importance of the city's logistics network.
A former US official, quoted by the newspaper, said the isolation of Bandar Abbas was deemed necessary to secure maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The Telegraph also noted that damage to civilian infrastructure raises questions under international humanitarian law.
No further details were immediately available on the scope of the strikes or the extent of the damage to Iran's transport network.
