US soldier killed in northern Iraq during disposal of Iranian drone munition

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A U.S. soldier was killed in northern Iraq on July 18 during the controlled disposal of unexploded ordnance from an Iranian one-way attack drone, U.S. Central Command said in a written statement. Another soldier was lightly wounded and is receiving medical treatment, the command added. The statement did not specify the location within northern Iraq where the disposal operation took place. Central Command also referenced a July 17 attack in Jordan by Iran-backed groups, which killed two U.S. soldiers and left one missing. It said a search operation for the missing service member was underway and that unidentified remains had been recovered earlier, with identification procedures continuing.
