A 22-year-old U.S. soldier was killed in a crash during an illegal street race near the Bavarian municipality of Gießenbach, the German newspaper Bild reported. The soldier and a 30-year-old fellow service member were driving two sports cars at high speed when both vehicles lost control on a wet road, crossed into the opposite lane and struck a truck.
The impact set the truck and one of the cars on fire. The 22-year-old was trapped inside the vehicle and died at the scene, according to the report. The truck driver and the soldier in the second car escaped with minor injuries.
German police have opened an investigation on suspicion of organizing an illegal race. Authorities said technical examinations are underway to determine the exact cause of the crash. No further details were immediately available.
