ANBAR, Iraq โ€” Researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in England interviewed 24 men aged over 30 and found that participants associated the word "diet" with restriction and deprivation. The study, published in the journal PLOS One, found that men largely viewed traditional dieting as a female domain and showed less interest in weight-loss programs. One participant said the word immediately brought to mind restriction and deprivation, while another said the idea of limitation sparked a sense of rebellion in him. The researchers noted that men tended to avoid discussing their weight and appearance with friends, which reduced participation in diet programs. The study found spousal support to be a decisive factor in men's weight-loss efforts. One participant said his wife warned him when he reached for unhealthy foods, while another said his wife steered him to apples instead of chocolate. The researchers recommended that programs aimed at men set clear, achievable goals, deliver tangible results early on and incorporate a measured element of social competition. The study reported that motivations for losing weight centered on body image and health concerns, particularly the fear of heart attacks.
