UK Met Office warns of sixth heatwave of the year

LONDON, United Kingdom — The UK Met Office has forecast a sixth heatwave of the year, warning that late-season hot spells or high-temperature periods could affect parts of Britain between Aug. 30 and Sept. 13, particularly in the south. Long-range projections published on Thursday said conditions in the south and east are expected to remain drier and more settled, with temperatures likely to stay above the seasonal average. A temporary dip in temperatures is expected between Aug. 20 and 29, with rain and showers forecast across large parts of the country as high pressure builds over the north and west while a low-pressure system moves in from the Atlantic, bringing wind and rain to the south. Britain has endured a punishing summer marked by record temperatures, widespread drought and a rise in mortality. During the year's fifth heatwave, the hottest day was recorded at 38.1°C, prompting the government to issue an emergency warning against the use of disposable barbecues because of the heightened risk of wildfires. In South Wales, 14 forest fires were actively burning as of the latest reports. No further details were immediately available.
