LONDON — The British government has declared an emergency alert for regions where temperatures are expected to reach 40°C this week. The Met Office issued a red warning, saying the extreme heat could seriously affect daily life.
Officials warned of possible delays in road and rail transport, as well as disruptions to air travel. Electricity, water and communications services could also face interruptions, according to the alert.
The Met Office said the heat poses a serious health risk to vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly and people with chronic conditions. Temperatures are forecast to peak on Wednesday and Thursday, with demand for health and social services expected to rise significantly.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid direct sunlight and stay adequately hydrated. The Met Office said the effects of the heatwave could continue for several more days.
