Two Najaf municipal employees sentenced to two years for bribery

NAJAF, Iraq — Two municipal employees working in Najaf as legal representatives were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and fined for requesting a bribe in exchange for dropping a complaint filed against them by a citizen. A local security source said the court convicted both defendants of bribery. The ruling was issued under Article 307 of Iraq’s amended Penal Code No. 111 of 1969. The provision criminalizes public officials who misuse their positions to accept bribes or reach agreements to do so. The source said the trial had concluded and the defendants had been sent to prison in accordance with the final judgment. Authorities said investigations into bribery and misconduct allegations would continue.
