Turkey's Mediterranean Grains, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Exporters' Union said its members recorded $151.3 million in exports in May, up 4% from the same month a year ago, with Iraq ranking among the leading destinations. The union said rising demand in Middle Eastern and African markets drove the growth, naming Iraq, Sudan, Libya and Kenya as the top destinations. Pulses led the sector's overseas sales at $31.6 million, including $21.6 million worth of red lentils. Demand for confectionery and biscuits remained strong in Iraq along with Japan, Russia and Germany. Sugar and sugar products exports rose 26% to $21.7 million, supported by demand in European and Middle Eastern markets, according to the union. Officials said the increase was helping preserve market share in target countries and expand overall export volumes.
