WASHINGTON, United States โ U.S. President Donald Trump called on Iran to return to negotiations and reach a deal, saying Tehran had fired missiles at Israel and should now pursue diplomacy instead.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said the two sides had been on the verge of signing an agreement when the attacks occurred. He had expected signatures to be placed Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the missiles were launched.
Trump said he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and requested that Israel refrain from responding to the strikes. He also expressed dissatisfaction that Israeli airstrikes on Beirut had not been coordinated with Washington.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards said the attacks would continue throughout the week. Israeli officials reported that their air defense systems intercepted Iranian missiles in northern regions where sirens sounded.
