Trump says US weighing renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'

In a post on his social media platform, Trump wrote that the United States "is seriously considering renaming Lake Ontario as Lake of America" because "we are not expecting to do much trade with Ontario anymore." The comments were posted as tensions over trade between Washington and Ottawa have intensified and the Trump administration has imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian goods. Lake Ontario is the smallest of the five Great Lakes of North America and straddles the US-Canada border, with Canadian cities including Toronto on its shores. Trump's earlier executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" was met with criticism from the Mexican government and President Claudia Sheinbaum. No response from the Canadian government to the latest proposal was immediately available.
