WASHINGTON, United States — WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Friday evening that a memorandum of understanding signed between Tehran and Washington could amount to "unconditional surrender" for Iran. In remarks to a U.S. news website, Trump said a naval blockade drew Iran to the negotiating table, made possible by the neutralization of Iran's navy and air force.
Trump said developments in Iran point to a change of regime, describing the new religious leader, Ali Khamenei, as different from his father. He also argued that war against Iran prevented "a global stagnation." The president called the 2015 nuclear agreement a "disaster" and said his own deal blocks Iran's path to a nuclear weapon.
Iran's Foreign Ministry announced Friday that a planned U.S.-Iran meeting in Switzerland had been postponed, saying the urgency of talks had faded after the memorandum was signed. According to the Swiss government, the meeting was to bring together the United States and Iran, along with Pakistan, Qatar and other concerned states, for initial consultations on implementing a peace agreement.
