MAYSAN, Iraq โ Police in Maysan province said they have arrested the suspect in the kidnapping and murder of a woman in the province 17 years ago. The Maysan Police Directorate said the case was reopened under the supervision of Police Director Maj. Gen. Numan Mohammed Numan, following directives from the Interior Ministry's police affairs undersecretary.
According to the statement, an investigative team attached to the Maysan Homicide Division's "Hatin" unit identified the main suspect through intelligence work and field surveillance and took him into custody. During interrogation, the man confessed that he had kidnapped and killed the woman after her family refused to pay a $20,000 ransom, and that he had concealed evidence of the crime for years.
The suspect was referred to court under Article 406 of the Iraqi Penal Code. The police statement said the investigation of open cases, including blood-feud files, remains a priority and that those responsible will be brought to justice. No further details on the victim's identity or the case timeline were immediately available.
