Stray dogs enter refugee camp in Duhok through fence gaps

DUHOK, Iraq — Residents of a refugee camp in Duhok said stray dogs have been entering tents through gaps in the fence, especially at night and at dawn. They said the fence has been damaged, but no serious step has been taken to address the problem. Camp residents said children and students are afraid to go outside in the morning or head to school. They added that some incidents were prevented from escalating only because families intervened. Residents called on officials to repair the fence and take measures against the stray dogs. An official working in animal rights said a shelter for animals is planned to open soon in Duhok, but said solving the problem completely will take time. The number of stray dogs in the city is not known because there are no official figures, the article said. Unofficial estimates put the number at more than 25,000.
