Security officer injured during gun cleaning at police center in southern Iraq

DHI QAR, Iraq — A security officer was seriously injured when a weapon accidentally discharged during routine cleaning at a police center in the Diwaniyah district of Najaf Province, security officials said. The injured officer was transferred to the nearest hospital for treatment. The officer whose gun misfired was taken into custody following the incident, according to the official. In a separate case, a female healthcare worker in her 70s was hospitalized after attempting suicide by cutting her wrists, authorities said. The woman, whose family dispute prompted the act, was receiving medical care. No further details about her condition were immediately available. Meanwhile, authorities in Maysan Province detained a social media activist for administering a Facebook page that addressed corruption, officials said. An official said the operation was carried out over suspicions that the page was being used as a tool for blackmail against citizens and local officials. The activist remained in custody as of the latest reporting.
