Saudi Arabia draws 1-1 with Uruguay in World Cup Group H opener

MIAMI — Saudi Arabia and Uruguay opened their 2026 World Cup Group H campaign with a 1-1 draw, with both teams collecting a point on the opening day of the tournament. Abdulelah Al-Amri gave Saudi Arabia the lead in the 41st minute, finishing from a corner inside the penalty area. Goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais preserved the advantage through the first half, denying several dangerous Uruguay attacks. Uruguay came close to equalizing in the 60th minute when Manuel Ugarte's shot struck the post. Maximiliano Araújo finally leveled the score in the 80th minute, and the match ended 1-1. In the other Group H match, Spain drew 0-0 with Cape Verde, leaving all four teams level on a point apiece. Saudi Arabia faces Spain in its second group match on June 21.
