KYIV, Ukraine โ A Russian combined attack using ballistic missiles and drones struck Ukraine's capital, killing at least eight people and wounding 25, officials said. Kyiv Military Administration head Timur Tkachenko reported that children were among the injured and accused Russian forces of deliberately targeting civilian areas.
The Ukrainian Air Force had issued warnings of ballistic missiles approaching the capital, after which residents reported more than 12 explosions in central and eastern parts of the city. People took shelter in metro stations, and footage released by Ukraine's State Emergency Service showed extensive damage to a residential complex.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko confirmed the capital was hit by ballistic missiles and drones. Kyiv region governor Mykola Kalashnyk said warehouses, homes, a student dormitory and numerous vehicles were damaged in the surrounding region, with firefighting operations continuing in Bucha.
The attack followed intelligence reports indicating Russia was preparing a large-scale assault, prompting President Volodymyr Zelensky to cut short a visit to Dublin and return to Ukraine.
